Centerfire Rifle
Target will be the SR-1 target. You can buy them at MidwayUSA here. Match will be a 400 point match, broken into four stages of 100 points, or 10 shots. Since many of us are new to these styles of shooting, competitors will be permitted to shoot two sight-in shots at the target at each stage, timed at one shot per two minutes. The two lowest scoring shots on target will be dropped. This is not a requirement, however, and competitors may shoot only the required shots if they desire. The stages are
- Slow fire, standing, unsupported – 10 rounds in 10 minutes, at single SR-1 target @ 100 yards.
- Rapid fire, sitting or kneeling – 10 rounds in 60 seconds, at single SR-1 target @ 100 yards.
- Rapid fire, prone – 10 rounds in 70 seconds, at single SR-1 target @ 100 yards.
- Slow fire, prone – 10 rounds in 10 minutes, at single SR-1 target @ 100 yards.
For center fire rifle there will be two classes. One class for competitors who wish to shoot with open sights, and one class for competitors who wish to shoot with optical sights. Red dot sights, and holographic sights count as optical sights.
Smallbore Rifle
Small bore competition will have three stages of fire. We’ll be using the NRA A-23/3 50 yard targets. Competitors may use other A-23 targets in leiu of the 3 bull target. This will be a 300 point match, with 10 shots at each stage. As with the centerfire match, a competitor may opt to take two sight in shots, at the rate of one shot every two minutes, with the two lowest scoring shots dropped.
- Standing, 10 rounds in 10 minutes at 50 yards.
- Kneeling or sitting, 10 rounds in 10 minutes at 50 yards.
- Prone, 10 rounds in 10 minutes at 50 yards.
Again, one class for open sights, and one class for scoped rifles. The same as with the centerfire match.

“Ready on the right?”
“Ready on the left?”
“Commence firing!”
I tried my Armalite this weekend in practicing for this match…… UGGHhhhh.
I better stick to my old Turkish Mauser.
There’s a decent Marlin bolt action .22 sitting in the safe too…….
Shucks, this league is an excuse to try several rifles!

Would you please define “unsupported” in centerfire rule 1? Also, is the standing portion of the smallbore category done in a similar unsupported position?
I know that in a recent ePostal match some contestants consider “unsupported” to mean that they could lean against something, just not rest the arms or rifle on anything. In the silhouette competitions, unsupported means you can’t even let your arms touch your body.
Not trying to make this a nit-picky event, just looking for a level playing field.

Best I can do is here. NRA only has their index online.

Unsupported means that you have no artificial support. That would mean you’re literally standing, not being propped up by something, or leaning on something.

Sebastian is, of course, welcome to come up with his modifications of the rules… but in High Power and Smallbore, unsupported means no touching of stuff that isn’t the ground.
In prone, the rifle can’t touch the ground, and you can’t have a support (bag, etc.) under your hands or the rifle, or anywhere else
In kneeling you can use a kneeling roll under your shooting side leg. A sling is allowed. Your support elbow can rest on your knee. Your shooting elbow can’t rest on anything.
For sitting, your elbows can touch your legs anywhere below the ankles, but not the ground. Your legs can be crossed (indian style), crossed farther in front (aka cross leg) or open. You can use a sling.
For standing, your elbow can be (and should be) on your hip or rib cage unlike silhouette, but you can’t use a sling for any kind of support standing. Also, you can’t lean against anything for standing. For smallbore, no part of the rifle forward of the pistol grip can touch your chest or body; for high power it’s probably okay, but it’s a gray area. (”artificial support” isn’t always well defined, or even as clear cut as “I’ll know it when I see it”)
This page, http://ray-vin.com/frtech.htm, has explanations of how to rig up a leather 1907 sling, and the cotton web sling for an M1. I’d *highly* recommend using one. The web slings are about $5 at a gun show. It also has image files of the targets at various ranges.

I bought the 100 targets from Midway, but it will be a long time before I use them all. Instead I’ll make smaller quantities available at cost + shipping. Looks like I can mail 9 targets for $6 all costs included. See sandcastlescrolls.blogspot.com for more details.
